Hayeon Shim holds a BFA in Theatre (Directing) from Chung-Ang University. She is currently a Creative Project Manager at Dotmill, a premier art-tech company, and concurrently serves as a Coordinator for the Korea Art Directors’ Association (KADA). Her past roles include Curator for the New Media Art Research Association (NMARA) and a participant in the Arts Korea Council APE CAMP 2025.
Shim’s practice begins with the act of 'invitation.' Her aim is not for the audience to remain passive observers, but to construct a world of 'all-encompassing immersion' that allows them to walk inside the narrative and become 'participants.' This vision is the core of her thesis: "The Director-as-Architect." The 'invisible architecture' of theatrical Dramaturgy (the design of gaze, rhythm, and flow) that she mastered must now be expanded into the language of new technologies like AI, XR, and spatial audio. Her ultimate goal is to build a 'Creative Lab' that fuses these elements to research and create participatory worlds.
Her professional capabilities are proven not only in personal artistic works but also through hands-on development and execution of large-scale public and commercial projects. As a Creative PM at Dotmill, Shim led the ₩2B (2-billion KRW) Tongjeyeong: Light of Peace project as its Content PM and Performance Director, engaging over 130,000 visitors, and is a key planner for an ongoing ₩5B+ project. In performance art, she adapted and directed A Midsummer Night’s Dream as an immersive musical, and her production Once Upon A Time won Best Stage Performance at the WTEA International Theatre Festival with its international tour (Beijing, Berlin). Her AI art project, RESONANCE BEYOND, won the Excellence Award at the SNU AI Art Hackathon and was presented at an international conference. Commercially, she arranged and directed the Miss Korea stage for the KBS broadcast The Ddanddara, earning a perfect score from JYP and a re-staging at the APEC Music Festa.
Her awards include Excellence Award (Seoul Data Hub Data Visualization Competition, 2025), Best Directing Award (Chung-Ang Univ., 2024), Excellence Award (XR Ideathon, Ministry of Science and ICT, 2024), Excellence Award (AI Art Hackathon, Seoul National Univ., 2024), Best Stage Performance (WTEA Festival, 2023), and First Prize (ALCP Creative Group, 2023). She is a co-author of the 2023 ATEC Conference Report and also founded the interdisciplinary immersive research community, 'Ready To Play'. She also recently designed and instructed Dotmill's internal AI Art workshop for creative professionals, continuing her work to bridge academia and industry.
심하연은 중앙대학교 연극학과에서 연출 전공으로 학사(BFA) 학위를 받았다. 현재 아트-테크 기업 닷밀(Dotmill)의 크리에이티브 프로젝트 매니저(PM)이자, 한국예술기획자협회(KADA)의 코디네이터로 활동 중이다. 또한 뉴미디어아트연구회(NMARA)의 큐레이터를 역임했으며, 한국문화예술위원회 APE CAMP 2025년 참가자이기도 하다.
심하연의 작업은 '세계로의 초대'라는 행위에서 시작된다. 그녀의 지향점은 관객을 '관찰자'에 머무르게 하는 것이 아니라, 이야기 속으로 직접 걸어 들어와 '참여자'가 되게 하는, '사방을 둘러싸는 몰입(All-encompassing Immersion)'의 세계를 구축하는 것이다. 이 비전이 바로 "연출가는 시스템 설계자(Director-as-Architect)"라는 그녀의 핵심 명제다. 연극을 기반으로 시작한 그녀의 환상의 세계 만들기는, AI, XR, 입체음향, 미디어파사드 등 신기술의 '언어'로 확장되고 있다. 그녀의 궁극적인 목표는 이 모든 요소를 융합하여 '참여형 세계관'을 탐구하고 창조하는 '크리에이티브 랩'을 구축하는 것이다.
그녀의 실무 역량은 개인 예술 작업을 넘어, 대규모 공공(Public) 및 상업(Commercial) 프로젝트 현장에서 직접 기획하고 실행하며 증명되고 있습니다. 심하연은 닷밀의 PM으로서 13만 명 이상의 관객을 유치한 20억 규모의 <통제영: 빛의 평화> 프로젝트를 콘텐츠 PM이자 퍼포먼스 디렉터로 이끌었으며, 이외에도 현재 50억+ 규모의 프로젝트 기획에 참여하고 있다. 공연예술 작업으로는 <한여름 밤의 꿈>을 이머시브 음악극으로 각색 및 연출하였고, <Once Upon A Time>을 베이징, 베를린 등 국제 무대에 올려 WTEA 최우수 작품상을 수상했으며, AI 아트 프로젝트 <RESONANCE BEYOND>는 서울대 AI 해커톤에서 수상하고 국제 컨퍼런스(Art Diffusion)에서 발표되었다. 상업적으로는 KBS <더 딴따라> '미스코리아' 무대를 편곡/연출하여 JYP 100점 및 APEC 무대 재공연을 성사시켰다.
주요 수상 경력으로는 중앙대학교 최우수 연출상(2024), 과학기술정보통신부 XR 아이디어톤 우수상(팀 리더, 2024), 서울대학교 AI 아트 해커톤 우수상(팀 리더, 2024), WTEA 국제 연극 페스티벌 최우수 작품상(프로듀서, 2023), 중앙대학교 ALCP 창의 그룹 최우수상(리더, 2023) 등이 있다. 그녀는 2023 ATEC 컨퍼런스 보고서의 공동 저자이며, 다학제 이머시브 연구 커뮤니티 'Ready To Play'를 꾸리기도 했다. 최근에는 닷밀 사내 AI 아트 워크숍을 직접 설계하고 강의하는 등, 계속해서 학계와 산업계를 잇는 기획 활동을 이어가고 있다.
